Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

L-Brackets vs. Add-On Friction Sway Bars

  • L-brackets that hold spring bars in place provide a tried-and-true method of sway control
    • Provides weight distribution and sway control in one system
    • Ensures steady towing, but can be noisy
  • Friction sway bars can be added to a standard weight distribution hitch to force your trailer back in line
    • Has to be removed at times (e.g. in the rain or when you're backing up), but its adjustable tension is a plus
    • Doesn't work with surge-type actuators

If you love BulletProof Hitches and you wouldn't dream of buying anything else for your weight distribution needs, look no further. With sway control built-in, it creates a rigid system that holds your trailer in line behind your vehicle, helping keep your trailer from getting off track. And it uses friction to force your trailer back in line if a strong crosswind or passing truck is a bit too much for the rigid hold to handle on its own.

Because the steel-on-steel friction of the bars and L-brackets is noisy, don't be alarmed if you hear some banging, creaking, and grinding. It's just the system working to correct sway

Fun Fact: Steel-on-steel friction is what locomotives use to keep multi-ton railcars from swaying.

BulletProof's Signature Powder Coat Looks Great, but May Rust Quickly in Spots

Image of a used L-bracket on a BulletProof Hitch weight distribution system shows rust and other signs of wear

You know how they say, "take a picture, it'll last longer?" The same applies here. After we towed with this system a handful of times, we found that the rough, black powder coat was already rusting in spots where there is direct steel-on-steel contact (e.g. the L-brackets and underneath the spring bars). If you love the BulletProof brand name, and you like how this hitch looks out of the box (which is packaged beautifully, by the way) you should probably take a picture of the hitch before you use it, becuase it won't look any better than the day you bought it.

Adjusting the Head Tilt

  • Adding washers adds tension, but it's not a case of "the more the merrier"
  • Stacking washers can be a pain, but you only need to do it once, or if your tongue weight changes

To adjust the tilt, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert it into the head assembly. Once the spacer is in place, tighten the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank. To check if your truck and trailer are level, you'll need to hookup and release your tongue jack. If you find that the rear of your truck is still sagging, add washers to increase leverage. If it looks like too much weight has been taken off your truck's rear axle and is sitting on your front axle, try removing a few washers.

While the washer-stacking method allows you to fine-tune the setup at the time of installation, it's going to require some patience. It can be time consuming because, if you don't get everything right the first time (which, you probably won't), you'll have to take the head unit apart to adjust the washers. You might have to raise or lower the L-brackets too to get the tension just right, and that's a bit of a pain also. Not to mention that you might have to repeat this process if your tongue weight changes or if you swap out your tow vehicle.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

Video Transcript for Hands-On with the BulletProof Hitches Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control

Hi, everybody. Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a look at this BulletProof Hitches Weight Distribution System with Sway Control. Now, this weight distribution system is going to give you a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and your trailer. Adding spring bars to your towing system is going to apply leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer. That's going to result in an even distribution of weight throughout.

That's going to give you a smooth, level ride as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch. Now, this has a tongue weight range from 800 pounds to 1,000 pounds and a maximum gross towing weight of 10,000 pounds. And that tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size of weight distribution system that you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, that's gonna create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. But if, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

So to determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's weight and then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Those two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system. Once you have those two measurements, you're gonna be able to correctly choose which kind of weight distribution system you're going to need. Now, this system does feature an integrated two-point sway control that's going to limit side-to-side movement of your trailer. These brackets are going to keep these forged steel spring bars in place for a rigid system that's going to hold your trailer in line.

The steel-on-steel friction is going to help minimize the sway caused by winds or sudden maneuvers. And the system doesn't have lift chains, eliminating unwanted movement of the spring bars. These no-drill, clamp-on brackets are gonna mount directly to the frame of your trailer. And this is going to fit trailer frames with the maximum dimensions of three inches to six inches. This is going to fit trailer hitch receivers rated for use with weight distribution systems.

And the sway control bracket positioning should be a minimum of four inches in from the end of the spring bar. This entire system does feature BulletProof Hitches' matte black powder coat finish. It's gonna do a great job of resisting rust and corrosion. And the system does include everything that you see here laid out on my table before me. You're gonna receive the 2-5/16-inch ball, the spring bars that we've been talking about, the sway control brackets, the spring bar lift tool that will help you get these spring bars in the right position. And then you're also going to receive all the pins and the clips and all the necessary hardware. As you can see, I do kind of have this loosely put together on my table just to kind of give you an idea of what the finished product is going to look like once you have this installed. Now, an adjustable shank is sold separately. This is going to work with the industry standard shanks that are two inches wide and have holes spaced at 1-1/4 inches apart on center. But this can be attached to your current BulletProof drop hitch with the shank accessory that you see there on your screen. If you would like to check that out, you can just take that item number that you see there on your screen, pop it in the search field of our website. That will take you to that shank accessory, and you can add that to your order if you so desire. Now, this does have a limited lifetime warranty from BulletProof Hitches. Instructions are also included to guide you through the installation process and also go over the features in a little more detail. I think that's gonna wrap up our look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.
